Born in Sri Lanka, Kumar studied typographic design at the London College of Printing. After working in London he lived in Hong Kong for 18 years, working with studios and agencies, and teaching graphic design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic. In 1983 he started his own design consultancy specialising in corporate graphics and publishing design. He has designed many award winning publications including Discovery (Cathay Pacific inflight magazine) Pacific (American Express cardmembers’ magazine, Serendib (the magazine of Air Lanka). He left Hong Kong for Australia in 1988 and lives and works in Sydney with his wife Sally and their sons Robert and James.
He has worked in publishing in Sydney with magazine and book publishers and designed and art directed cook books before joining Sydney Institute, TAFE NSW Design Centre, Enmore where he was Senior Head Teacher Graphic design, until 2007.
He has always had an interest in food and has featured on ABC radio “Gifted Gourmet” and has had recipes included in publications. In 2011, he was a contestant in MasterChef Australia, series 3 where he made it to the top 12.
In 2012 he was in MasterChef All Stars where selected contestants from the 3 previous years were invited to be part of a special show.
His book ‘Kumar’s Family Cookbook’ was published in May 2013 by Allen & Unwin, Australia and is available for sale in Australia and online worldwide.
In addition to appearances and demonstrations both in Australia and internationally, he continues to cook, write and illustrate and look after his veggie patches.
In 2014 he published a set of 6 illustrated all occasion cards of fruit, vegetables and flowers with a very simple recipe suggestion. These are sold in packs of six and marketed under the name “Paletteables” and sold around Australia or available online through this website.
He is currently working on a second series of cards and another project for release early in 2016.
