Culinary tours to Sri LankaFor the past 5 years I have taken groups of people on culinary tours of Sri Lanka, which cover the culture, history, gardens, architecture and food of the country. The tour takes in the major historic sites, temples and introduces people to the variety of food and spices of the country. The tours are for 16 nights [17 days] with travel to the beaches, hill country and inland including seeing elephants in the wild. This year we will be doing 2 tours, one in April and the other in August. The April tour coincides with Sinhalese and Tamil New Year celebrations where you get a chance to observe all the local customs, traditions and food associated with these celebrations. The August tour takes in the annual Kandy Perahera, where the tooth relic of the Buddha is taken in procession around the city of Kandy and is accompanied by hundreds of dancers, drummers, acrobats, fire twirlers, chieftains and ornately decorated temple elephants. This is a magnificent parade which is the highlight of the year.
All of the ground arrangements are handled by Sri Lanka Tailormade, the travel division of Jetwing and who have arranged these tours for the past five years.
The Culinary Escapes planned for this year are now open for bookings. We travel with a small group escorted by me and my wife, and I do demos at the hotels where we stay using local produce and spices. Check out details at
