Spring

It has been a long while since I updated this website. I missed out on Winter. Hospitalisation for knee surgery meant some time off. It is now recovery time and it is slow. But I am taking it easy.
So another season has rolled in. Yes it is Spring. The days are getting longer and welcome warmer days are here to stay. Jasmine and magnolia have flowered and the wisteria is now showing off. My grapevines are sprouting new growth and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this year will see some fruiting. I have two vines – a green and red grape, both table varieties and judging by the profusion of growth it looks likely that they will fully cover the little pergola with ample shade from the summer sun and there will be bunches of grapes peeking though the canopy – oh well, it’s nice to have a dream… watch this space !
Last year I re-potted the vines into 45L pots with very good potting mix and they put out a spurt of growth and one did produce a couple of bunches of fruit but it was very late in the season and cool autumn weather put paid to any hope of the fruit setting. So fingers crossed.
I did harvest the leaves as there was quite a lot and picked and used them for making dolmades. Delicious lunchtime treats and so easy to do. I like them with brown rice as they have a nuttier taste and sometimes add cooked barley to the mixture as it makes it even chewier. Dolmades are usually vegetarian with rice, herbs and spices but I’ve had them with the addition of seasoned ground beef or lamb as well. They make a great appetiser or main, and are so good to take on a picnic as they can be enjoyed warm when freshly cooked or cold. Perfect portable finger food.
There is a little time and effort required in the preparation of the leaves and the cooking of the stuffing and rolling the leaves. But once you get the hang of it it is easy. Best make a large batch and refrigerate. All you need to do is to bring them back to room temperature to enjoy.
